Emily Oehler (’93)
Emily graduated with a Communications degree. She is currently a Strategic Communications Consultant. She has spent 25 years doing communications work on issues such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, treatments for wounded warriors, and military spouse employment. We are so proud of our sister squirrel’s amazing career, where she has won over 20 awards including the Booz Allen Hamilton Involvement & Impact Award in recognition of excellence in community service for her work as a TV producer, crisis communications manager, Undersecretary speech writer and division manager. Still, she says that she is most proud of her work helping to tell wounded veterans’ stories of injury, recovery and resilience.
She still finds time to mentor the next generation of communicators. Community service and volunteer work is important to Emily, who is an Elder at her church, the President of the Junior League of Northern Virginia, and has previously served on the boards of Silent Siren and Child and Family Network Centers. She continues to be involved with Mary Baldwin by serving on the Community Advisory Board. Emily shared with us how much she values her education at Mary Baldwin and utilizes skills she developed:
“Beyond the foundation of a liberal arts education which enables me to work across a broad spectrum of industries (i.e., banking, insurance, defense, automobile, healthcare), Mary Baldwin developed my confidence as a female leader. The women-centered culture, courses, and activities helped prepare me to use my voice – and not wait to be called on. Professionally there have been many occasions when I was the youngest person and/or only woman in a room, and I did not waiver in my right to be there or the value of my input. Mary Baldwin also instilled me in a commitment to mentor other women.”
It is clear that Emily developed some awesome leadership skills through her experience at Mary Baldwin. As an outstanding alum, Mary Baldwin recognized her with the Emily Wirshing Kelly Leadership Award in recognition of professional and community leadership. We are lucky to have such an extraordinary leader be voted onto the Mary Baldwin Alumni Board. She fights for our alums and our college! Join Emily in her support of Boldly Lead and Mary Baldwin by volunteering too!
