Holly South (’97)
Holly South graduated with a Psychology degree and went into the Navy. She then transitioned into a foreign military sales program as a Program Manager. As a civilian, she now holds an instrumental job protecting our nation through selling missiles, helicopters, aircraft, and transferred ships. This important role takes her to four continents, 17 countries, and 24 states!
“I didn’t realize the benefit of Mary Baldwin and single sex education until I went to get my graduate degree through a co-ed program.” But the change was drastic—and it didn’t take her long to realize what was going on. “During my first class, I found myself hesitating to raise my hand. It took me two weeks to realize what I was doing. Once I did, I thought to myself, ‘Forget these guys. It’s not my fault if they don’t know the answer.’ And I started raising my hand each and every time. I’m sure I looked like the class know-it-all but I’m not going to apologize for being smart, doing the work, and engaging in my education.”
In fact, Holly values single-sex education so much that both of her kids attend single-sex middle schools. She supports both schools’ efforts by serving on the Parent-Teacher Board of one school and regularly volunteering at the other.
